First "Real" Blog
Okay, this is my first "real" blog posting, so please bear with me as my mind is in a bit of a craze right now from the news I received not too long ago.
My wife (Kelly) had a pre-natal doctor's appointment today and called me afterwards to share the details with me. Seems that she is beginning to dilate (2-3 cm) and the doctor has confined her to bed rest until at least Thursday when she must go in for a follow-up appointment. Depending on the results of the follow-up, it's possible that our baby could be delivered as early as next Monday (April 24).
Now, I know I shouldn't be surprised or anything like that. Hell, I've known that Kelly's been pregnant for several months now, I've noticed that she's put on a little bit of weight, I've seen a baby-shaped object on a T.V. screen in a doctor's office waving at me, and I've even seen the little thing do it's best "Alien" impression by attempting to burst it's feet and/or legs through my dear wife's stomach. But not until the news this morning did it really hit me that this baby is indeed going to join this world, and it may be sooner than we all expected.
Kelly's due date was supposed to be May 15, and I always realized that the baby could come sooner, but I never had truly mentally prepared myself for that possibility. Now that possibility appears to be a likelihood and my mind is racing and my emotions are all over the map. Of course I feel excited and happy, but beyond that I feel nervous, scared, confused, and concerned just to name a few. I look forward with great excitement to meeting Baby Hydock in the flesh and shaking his/her little hand and welcoming him/her to this world...After that point it gets a little fuzzy.
I know the first days/weeks/months/(years) are going to be trying and I am unsure of how I will handle it. This is my first human baby (we have a dog), and I've never considered myself a "baby person" so I don't know how I'm going to adjust to having to be around a baby day in and day out and being responsible for teaching the baby right and wrong and everything else that we all learn growing up. Will I be a good father and develop a solid bond with my child or will I wilt under the pressure and not know what to do and never develop that bond and end up being the worst father in the world?
Both of my parents and both of my wife's parents are as great as one could ever hope for and now that I'm going to be starting as a parent I know that it wasn't easy. Looking back I wasn't the best kid, and at times I felt like they were horrible parents. But now I know that they always did what was best for me, even though I may not have realized it at the time. I hope that I can be even half as good to my child as they have been to me.
So right now Baby Hydock is packing up his/her things and getting ready to make it's journey into the real world.
Am I ready?
I better be.
